High School is a critical time to assess what you do and do not want in a college major, career and college. Along with family and school support, there are website resources to assist you along your journey. It addition to these resources, I have college major books, a file cabinet full of brochures from colleges, and the library has resources on resumes, choosing a college and SAT Prep. Everything is available to you, but it is ultimately your responsibility to search for answers. If you are interested in speaking to me about your college/career process, it is imperative that you come to my office with a pass. Parents, feel free to contact me to set up an appointment.

Scholarships:

Scholarships are available to students of any grade level. Review the links below to search for scholarships. Often times, scholarships may request a similar essay, therefore, save your essays because you may be able to use the same essay with a different scholarship. The most common scholarship is Bright Futures. If awarded, this pays for at least 75% of tuition, but you must attend school in Florida to receive this(all public schools accept this and some private schools do). You can apply to as many scholarships as you want!

Financial Aid

Although seniors cannot apply for financial aid until after January 1st, it is critical to know that it is available to you. Federal and state funds are distributed to students based on financial need and merit(grades).  Students can receive thousands of dollars in aid, especially if attending a private institution. The FAFSA must be filled out after January 1st to receive aid. The earlier you apply, the more money that is received. Even if you do not think your family will qualify, apply!!!

Testing

The SAT and ACT are tests used for admissions into college. They can also be used by seniors who have not passed the FCAT. Four-year institutions use the SAT Reasoning Test/ACT for admissions, whereas community colleges use it for placement in classes. All students should take both tests because they often do better on one than the other. For students interested in attending rigorous institutions, especially Ivy League colleges, SAT Subject Tests may be required in addition to the SAT/ACT. Search individual school websites for admissions requirements. Although paper applications are available in my office, I highly recommend that students register online to expedite the process. Students receive scores three weeks after the test. It is the students responsibility when registering to send the scores to the colleges in which they are applying. Colleges require test scores to be sent directly from the CollegeBoard or ACT. Test scores on a transcript will not satisfy this requirement.

If SAT/ACT prep classes are out of your price range, I recommend buying an SAT/ACT preparation book at a local bookstore. Somerset Academy Charter offers SAT Prep Math and Reading as an elective during school.

Somerset Summer College Tour

Over the summer, 35 sophomores, juniors and seniors went on a college tour around the state of Florida. We visited UCF, UF,

USF, Ringling College of Art and Design, and New College of Florida. Somerset students had the opportunity to visit

college campuses, dorms and attend various informational sessions. The students learned that not every college is for them and

that they need to do research before enrolling in an institution. Every college campus is different, so it is critical that

students visit a campus before committing.
