I moved from the Big Apple to Sunny Sunny Sunny
Florida and have been a part of the Somerset Panther
team for a year now. I was a 5th grade teacher at a
dual language school, The American Sign Language and
English Lower School, in New York City for 2 years (yes,
I am fluent in American sign Language) and a 5th grade
teacher last year. Last year my 5th graders and I
started the Elementary newsletter, The Panther Page. I
look forward to another year of interesting,
controversial
J
and informative articles.
I am a graduate of the Deaf and
Hard of Hearing Education Program at Teachers College,
Columbia University. I graduated in May 2005 with a
Masters of Education and Masters of Arts degree in Deaf
Education. With the completion of my degrees, I am
dual-certified in Deaf Education (all grades) and
Childhood Education (grades 1-6). I recently
finished my certificate in Ed. Leadership and would like
to one day open my own dual language school for the Deaf
and Hearing.
As a teacher, I strive to be- Inspiring, Empowering,
Relevant, and Engaging. I realize that this is not an
easy feat, as it requires an educator with a strong
dedication to students and education. However, from the
knowledge I have obtained through graduate school and my
previous teaching experience, I feel confident that I
will be able to meet my own challenge.
I believe
that it is the role of a teacher to find the strengths
in every child and allow it to resonate throughout all
classroom activities and learning experiences. In
my experience as an educator I have found that
facilitating, rather than dictating, is a highly
beneficial style of teaching for both the teacher and
the students. I have learned that if students
construct their own learning experiences they will not
only retain information, but they will also become more
confident in their abilities.
“Education is the most powerful
weapon, which you can use to change the world.”
-Nelson Mandela
