My name is
Jennifer Hicks and I have been an employee at Somerset
Academy for the past 8 years. I began with Ms. Kaye as
her assistant and have been working in my own classroom
for the past four years.
My career in
education began 14 years ago, when I began teaching at
Chesterbrook Academy in Weston (formerly known as
Another Generation Preschool). It was there that I began
to develop my own ideas about teaching and what I wanted
my future to look like. I was fortunate to be surrounded
by wonderful professionals that had a genuine love for
children. Thanks to those women I learned a tremendous
amount through hands on experience. The experience was
invaluable. I was employed there for seven years and
worked predominantly with the Pre-K and Kindergarten
children, although I was a camp counselor with the
school age children each summer. As you can imagine, the
summers, with their field trips and unbearable heat,
posed new challenges all their own. The next stop would
be Somerset…
As I mentioned, I
began as an assistant in the Kindergarten classroom and
it is there that I gained even more necessary
experience. Those first four years allowed me to
establish my own way of doing things and prepared me for
what would lie ahead. I have truly enjoyed my first
years of teaching and the students and I have made our
way together – successfully so far.
I am a native
Floridian, having lived in Broward County my entire
life. I am a proud product of the Broward County public
school system. Educationally, I graduated with my B.A.
in Elementary Education from Florida Atlantic University
and I will begin the Masters program for School
Counseling this semester, August 2008.
I look forward to
each new school year and I am excited to face the
challenges that the upcoming year will present.
